Never in reply to the question, to what country you belong, say that you are an Athenian or a Corinthian, but that you are a citizen of the cosmos.”

Stoics as Citizens of the Cosmopolis
Ancient Stoic thinkers promoted the notion that humans are not merely citizens of their local cities or nations, but of a global community they called the “cosmopolis” or world-city. This perspective encouraged Stoics to view all people as fellow citizens deserving of respect and ethical treatment, regardless of their origin or social status. The cosmopolitan ideal emphasized our shared humanity and rational nature, advocating for a sense of duty and responsibility that extended beyond local boundaries to encompass all of humankind.
At Stoicon 2024 we explore the themes of what it means to act with virtue as citizens of the world.
